November 28

Blowing and burning has pretty well left us here in a leafless station over the sill. Looking out the window is a bare-assed looking world I'm telling you, we kinda live on a hill but don't live in a mansion and life here isn't loveless. Couple more little tiny bunches of nothing and I be satisfied enough to hit send.

Dory has about made up her mind to have me put up several strings of colored or flashing lights around the house like we used to do. Can you call them Christmas lights anymore?

Older is when you begin to realize Christmas isn't about all the giving and receiving of gifts and never should have been. With problems like that unplugged from your socket the real reason is left exposed, the commemoration of the birth of Christ.

I'm not sorry to say, but you'll not find any presents laying under our tree and as far as that goes Dory has about decided against having a tree at all. We still enjoy the season and eat like a pig but priorities do change. When you don't have any children's minds to beguile by the gift giving, while the real meaning of Christmas is ignored or slotted way, way low, you don't have all the fuss and the end guilty conscious feelings. Wrong gift, not enough gifts or allowing the real meaning to only sidle in if at all.

Many people send cards to relatives, friends and even a few distant acquaintances, usually making the sending of cards a long drawn out affair as you attempt to write a short note or not and address all those envelopes. I'm fighting Dory a little bit over this sending thing. We think of you, we wish you happy times all the time and that would include the new year. Would it upset you if you didn't receive an envelope with our return address containing a card that you probably wouldn't have the time to read anyway? Nothing or something, watch your mail to realize the winner.

Remember this December, that love weighs more than gold!~Josephine Dodge Daskam Bacon
